Question

I'll be turning 27 in a few months. I have a Business degree but am earning very little money, especially for the high stress positions I have had in the past few years. I have recently come across Optometry as a potential career for my future. I enjoy helping people and think that I would love the Optometry field.

Should I continue my low wage job with my Business degree in hopes that I'll become successful or should I return to school?

Just to add more to the question, returning to school may put my 1 year relationship in jeopardy.

Hi there!  I kind of am in the same position as you.  I'm in my late twenties and i'm actually going into my 2nd year of my Bachelor of Commerce Degree - major in marketing and I'm still going to pursue optometry after I'm done.  If I were you, I would continue going to school to pursue optometry.  I understand that your 1 year relationship might be jeopardized, but you have to also think of your future career and if you'll be happy sticking with your business degree right now.  Try optometry school...at least you'll know how it's and that you've tried it out.  I know I'll be in my 30's once I'm done optometry school, but I won't let that phase me! =) GOOD LUCK on your decision!

Thanks for the advice. Good luck to you!! I hope everything works out. As for me, my relationship has ended, I am registered for school, but think I'm going to put it off for 1 year so that I can save up some money and make sure I'm making the right decision. I'm looking at 7-8 years of school, so I just want to be sure of my other options. I'll definitely be in my thirties before I finish, wow, lol. Thanks again, and good luck!

I am also in the same position as you. I am currently not happy with my job as engineer. My brother is an optometrist and I would love to do what he is doing right now.  Anything dealing with people is better than sitting in the workstation all day. However I don't have a science background as undergrad. could you let me know how you are thinking of going to optometry from business background?

Going into optometry from a business background will require me to start from scratch taking all the prerequisite courses and going to optometry school. Will take some time, which is why I want to make sure I make the right decision.
